Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who came along to the November Shoreham Bonfire Society meeting. On the night we had enthusiastic discussions on a range of issues from what the 2010 celebrations should look like to whom we need to contact to make the event come together.
If you did not get a chance to come along and share your views or can not make the next meeting on the 15th December, take a look at some of the feedback below and let us know what you think…. it’s a community event so add your views to help us make it the event you want to see.
Bonfire Procession – a popular start to any bonfire event, a fancy dress/costume procession gets everyone involved. Could we, like Beach Dreams, encourage the local schools to get involved? If we have a procession, where should it start, could we have multiple starting points, how long should it be – should we for example start from the town? If it is fancy dress, what theme should the fancy dress have? What else should the procession include… lanterns, torches, banners, effigies or sculptures?
Live music and food – should there be live music as part of the parade or at the bonfire site? If so, what sort? Would everyone like some food available – hotdogs etc?
Location – in the last few years Shoreham Beach has been the preferred location for the bonfire. On the night it was agreed that this was the first site to seek permission for – do you agree? If not, where else?
Fundraising – in the next 10 months we will need to raise a minimum of £5,000. This is ahuge task, so we are open to all ideas and suggestions of how we can make this a reality.

Although Shoreham will not have its beach bonfire in 2009, there will be Bonfires across West Sussex (check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sussex_Bonfire_Societies).
The Beach Bateria samba band, well known for its regular contributions at Beach Dreams and previous Shoreham Bonfire events, will be taking part at the Littlehampton Bonfire Society procession on Saturday 31st October. They have booked a 42-seat coach to get to/from the event and there are around 20 seats up for grabs. The coach has already been paid for but voluntary contributions to the cost will be well received.
The coach will leave the Royal Coach pub at 5.30 sharp returning at 11.30 so it’s a long night. Please check out this http://.lbs.me.uk/12.htm to get a flavour of the evening’s entertainment, there is also more info if you Google Littlehampton Bonfire Procession 2009.
This is a big and well-organised event and please note that the procession itself is “dry” – so anything looking alcoholic during the procession itself is likely to be confiscated! There will be plenty of refreshment opportunities before and after, however. If you really want to get into it there is a dressing-up opportunity and if you want to go in Beach Bateria colours its black, red and gold, if you have any gold stuff. Fairy lights are good as well!
Apart from all the fun, it will be good to get some ideas for our own show next year, which I am sure we are all itching to get stuck in to.
If you want to come along please contact us via the contact form.
The next meeting of the Shoreham Bonfire Society will be on the 10th November at the Beach House Bar (formerly the Angel Bar in East Street), 7.30pm and we would be delighted to see you there.
The Society has only recently been reformed and we are keen to have new members, so come along on Tuesday the 10th and find out more about how you could get involved.
We look forward to seeing you there.
